What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is used to create “micro-injuries” on the surface of your skin. These micro-injuries are safe and precise without leaving lasting marks on your skin. Microneedling safely activates your body’s natural healing abilities. After about a week of this healing process, your skin should start to become smoother and more even in texture and color. As your healing process builds collagen and generates new skin, you will begin to see a reduction in the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and skin depressions. You should see continued improvement over the course of the following months.
You may need three or more microneedling sessions to achieve the ultimate results you’re looking for. Depending on your skin type and your desired results, your sessions may take place monthly, bi-weekly, or every few weeks. You’re one-of-a-kind, and our doctor will recommend a unique schedule for you and your needs. It should also be noted that you may need sessions in the future, after your initial treatment, in order to maintain your results.
Microneedling is not like getting an injection because the needles are so tiny and short. You may feel warmth or vibration during the application process, but the sensation is not strong. A topical numbing cream can be requested, but it is usually not necessary. Any mild discomfort you experience will be temporary.
What happens during a Microneedling procedure?
Preparation
We will clean your skin to prepare and sanitize it. Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure, so you will be awake and be able to go about the rest of your day afterwards. Before your treatment, we will make you feel comfortable and treat you like family!
Treatment
Next up, we’ll use a fine-needle roller or pen to apply the microneedles. This will create tiny holes in your skin, but it will not feel like an injection. Patients describe it as a warm, light scratching feeling, but the sensation is mild. The treatment will take about 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the size and area of application.
Aftercare
A skin cream may be applied or recommended after the procedure to promote the healing process. You may experience redness and slight swelling after the treatment, but you should avoid applying makeup. You will also want to stay out of the sun to protect your skin. Your old skin will start to flake off, and new skin will grow in its place within a week or so! You can apply appropriate moisturizer as needed.
